SONGWRITING

Students participate in a 1 1/2 hour class learning how to write songs.  We work as a group, but some students may have individual song ideas that they are encouraged to develop, as well.  Currently, this class meets at ReadyMix Music recording studio in North Hollywood on Sundays, from 11am-12:30pm.

Kids learn to write contemporary songs in a band setting.  Students should bring their own instruments (excluding drums and keyboards as we have a piano and a drum kit) so we can develop and play our songs as we work.  If you write lyrics but don’t play an instrument that’s no problem!  You will learn how lyrics and music come together and work with the group.  The same goes for kids that write music but not lyrics.

Writing with other musicians is highly motivational and a very important part of music education. It develops teamwork and self-esteem and provides a wonderful opportunity to explore one’s thoughts and ideas.  Academically, it can help to develop better vocabulary, sentence structure and creative writing skills.  Songwriting can broaden kids’ overall knowledge and the many possibilities that exist in the study of music and language, all in a positive, fun and creative environment.

At the end of each 8 week session the group will record a song they have written. Kids that don’t play an instrument and are focused on lyric writing are involved in the recording and play a role in the production.  That particular class will run longer, usually about 2 hours.  Since classes are ongoing, students are encouraged to continue working with their writing group and progress to the next level of musicianship.  Our Rock Band program works well in conjunction with our Songwriting program.  It’s an amazing feeling to play and hear your original composition performed in a band setting!

Each 8 week session is $395 and includes all materials needed, studio time, etc.

If you sign up for more than one program, we offer a 10% discount on the second class.
